JUNIOR FOOTBALL U8-U12

Fun Football (8-9 Year olds born 2017 & 2018) at Northern Rovers FC

A new concept with the changes in how football is delivered by New Zealand Football will see Northern Rovers FC adopt an inhouse module where we will build on the growth of core skills whilst running an internal league on a Saturday morning.

Training, what training is available?  At Northern Rovers FC we run a Pre-Academy (PAC) program which is a skill centre over seen by our Director of Football with the support of club qualified coaches working in a 1:12 ratio. PAC runs on a Monday & Friday during term 1 and Monday & Wednesdays through term 2&3 and is an additional cost from your registration fees. Players will receive a free training tee which must be worn to training. This program is highly recommended for your children to be taught the right skill sets in the early stages of their footballing career to enable them to become the best version of themselves, build confidence and make new friends.

Games, how will games be run? These will take place at Becroft Park on Saturday mornings on purposly marked out 5v5 fields. We will run a league competition through our in house management tool where all teams will be provided with a draw showing the home and away team along with field allocation and kick off times for the season. Kick off times will vary through the season between 9am - 12pm. This is how a traditional Saturday game day will look should your time slot be 9am ....

  • 8.45am - Home team arrives to set field up
  • 9am - all team members arrive dressed and ready for play
  • 9am - 9.15am warm up to be taken by your coach
  • 9.15am - 9.20am coach to put you in your positions
  • 9.20am - 9.35am first half
  • 9.35 am - 9.40am half time
  • 9.40am - 9.55am second half

Goal Keepers, you will now play with Goal Keepers. We encourage all team members to have a go at this position however should a player not want to have a go this should not be mandated. The club will provide a goal keeper shirt which will remain part of the team kit and be shared through the team. It is recommended a player play 1 half in goal and the other hald in the outfield so everyone can get a turn. The club will provide gloves as available.

Coaches/Managers, Northern Rovers FC will be supplying a coach per field for the month of May to ensure everyone understands how Fun Football is run. Each team will need to nominate a manager and a coach for the season. From June onwards, or if the coach feels comfortable early, the teams coach will take over the running of the games. Each teams coach is encoured to coach on the field of play at the back to help direct and support players. The coahing role should be seen as a coach/referee rolled into one. The Manager role, should assist on the day by doing the substitutes every 3 to 4 minutes. ansuring equal game time. The manager is also respnsible for the mid week communication advising what time everyone should be at Becroft Park and ensuring you have enough players. We recommend using TeamReach as your communication tool.

Team formations, all teams should be put together based on friendships or should the club need to put players in teams this will be based on friendship requests and matching kids up from the same schools. If you have a team sorted please advise us of the members for this team along with the coach and manager. Team will comprise of 7 players max, this will allow 5 on the field and 2 subs,

Uniform, all players are required to purchase the offical club shirt, shorts and sock from either our online shop or from the physiocal store at McFetridge Park from March though to the end of May. Please note the shop will be closed during the April school holidays. Players must also wear as a compulsory item shin pads and boots.

Away team, the designated away team will be required to play in bibs which each team bag will be supplied with.

Set up and Pack down, Northern Rovers FC staff and grade convenors will support the set up process by marking out the field dimensions however it will be the home team for the first game of the day's responsibility to collect the equipment you need for the game. All you need for your game is 2 junior sized goals, 2 junior sized nets and 6 spot markers to mark out the retreating line. Should you be the first game on your allocated field you are required to do this as the home team. For pack up, if you are the last team for the day you are responsible for packing the gear away in the downstairs area of the club and stack junior goals in 1 of 3 piles off the fields, These stacks should be on the concrete base to the west of the clubhouse and in x2 stacks at the base of both light towers against the Tristram Ave fence.

Grade Convenor, this is a volunteer who will work alongside our staff and Director of Football to ensure a smoother operation throughout the season. Should you have any questions or concerns this person is your first point of contact.

At Northern Rovers FC, our Junior football philosophy emphasises the importance of nurturing a lifelong love for the game while providing pathways for both social and competitive player development. We strive to create an inclusive, supportive environment where every player can enjoy the game of football, develop their skills, and reach their full potential—whether playing for fun or aspiring to compete at the highest levels.

Core Principles

  1. Inclusivity and Enjoyment: Football is for everyone. We foster a welcoming culture where all players feel valued and supported.

  2. Player-Centered Development: Training programs are tailored to the age, skill level, and goals of our players, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to grow.

  3. Pathways for Growth: We provide clear opportunities for players to transition between social and competitive streams or vice versa, as their aspirations and abilities evolve.

  4. Community Values: Our club is a place to develop character, teamwork, and respect, both on and off the field.

Players are asked to select a social or competitive pathway via our registration form process and during February ID sessions teams are formed.

Social teams are typically coached by parent volunteers for a mid-week training and Saturday game day. Competitive Teams are coached by one of our qualified coaches or a parent who has played the game or professional sport to a high level. A very limited number of paid professional coaches are available as maybe required on a case by case basis for social teams.

Teams are formed by ensuring players of a similar level are grouped together to ensure the most enjoyable experience, this is done through Player ID sessions before the season starts typically these start in March. Priority is also given to keeping “friends” together at this age group.

To ensure players have access to high quality coaching to aid their development many players also attend the Pre-Academy (PAC) sessions. Academy trainings must be booked in addition to your player registration and are held on Monday & Friday evenings at Becroft Park in term 1 and Monday & Wednesday's in term 2 & 3, also at Becroft Park. For players who choose the competitive pathway, the academy sessions are included.

Pre-Academy (PAC)

What is PAC? PAC is a dedicated skill centre run and overseen by our 2 Director of Football staff. With the assistance of club qualified cooaches, PAC enables all levels of Juniors to be coached and mentor by qualified coaches. Players wishing to compete in our development teams *Black & Yelow) msut be part of the PAC program to be selected. This program is highly recommended for your children to be taught the right skill sets in the early stages of their footballing career to enable them to become the best version of themselves, build confidence and make new friends.

In term 1 PAC is run on a Monday & Friday evening at Becroft Park and in term 2 is on a Monday & Wednesday also at Becroft Park. Sessions are split into ange groups and within each session teams are grouped together to enable them to train together as a team. Session times are ...
